There’s no surefire secret to happiness that will work for every person. After all, we all have different things which motivate and fulfill us. However, it can be generally agreed that being well-rounded is key to being successful in life. We need to take action to improve ourselves in not just one area but as many areas as possible. Here are four tips to achieve excellence in every aspect of your life.
Hold yourself accountable
The person who determines your path in life is the one reading this article. You might be able to find some way to point fingers at others for why you feel unfulfilled, but you’re ultimately wasting your time by doing that. Part of being a decent person comes from acknowledging what is and what isn’t in your control.
If you resent others because they talk about working out at the gym, then you’re likely just feeling anger at yourself because you aren’t working out like you know you should. As an adult, there’s hardly anything that you can be forced into doing. This means you need to push yourself at all costs, rather than wait around for a miracle to occur.
Just like you need to hold yourself accountable in order to introduce good habits, you also need to practice self-discipline in order to eradicate bad habits. Bad habits aren’t just things like smoking or chewing your fingernails. They can also be things like oversleeping or scrolling mindlessly through your phone when you have downtime.
To address these, you need to be self-aware. Think about why you’re doing what you’re doing and make a mindful effort to avoid them. You should also introduce positive habits to replace them. For instance, every time you get the urge to pick up your phone for no reason, you should instead read from a book.

Aside from using it as a positive substitution for mindless scrolling, you should be reading. The benefits are innumerable, helping you to concentrate and better develop your mind. Texts ranging from engrossing articles to historical novels can stimulate our mind like nothing else. Don’t try to act like you have no time to read either. 30 minutes a day is enough to get through a novel in about a week. Think of how much more well-rounded you would be if you were reading 52 novels a year. You can also consider reading or listening to motivational speakers and public figures like Dallin Larsen or a personal hero of your own. Learning about how others have achieved excellence in their own lives can help you on your journey.
Meet new people
Just like reading, meeting new people is key to making you more well-rounded. You can only learn so much about the world by closing yourself off to only your experiences or the experiences of people with similar backgrounds or upbringings as you. In order to be truly excellent, you need to speak with people with all sorts of stories. This doesn’t need to a deep, probing interrogation either.
You can simply ask an older relative or friend about what life was like for them growing up compared to now. The more you speak to people with different backgrounds, the more likely you are to have a more nuanced view on the world.
Being excellent in life is all about effort. You can’t expect to flip a switch and have everything to be perfect. In order to get the results you desire, you need to make sure that you are putting in the necessary work. When you’ve achieved excellence in one area of your life, you should then look to the next area you can improve. It’s an ongoing, thrilling journey that will only become more gratifying the further you go. We hope this has given you a good idea of how to achieve excellence in your life.
