The new year is just around the corner! I’m sure that there’s so much you have planned and so much you want to accomplish in 2018. Right?
A lot of people have health goals, career goals, financial goals, and all sorts of yearly goals they want to accomplish. What better time to set these goals than at the beginning of a new year? While I believe that any time is the right time to make positive changes, the beginning of a new year gives us a fresh start like no other time.
One thing a lot of people might not be thinking of is how they can take better care of themselves in the new year. You’ve probably heard it before, but that’s because it’s so true: self-care isn’t just important; it’s vital to our mental and physical health.
Today I thought I’d share some of my best self-care tips for the new year so you can start the new year healthy and happy!
1.) Banish self-care guilt and negativity.
A lot of people have a problem with self-care because they think of it in a negative way. If that’s you, you should really think about it differently. Some people see self-care as selfish, lazy, or frivolous – but it’s none of those things. Give yourself permission to practice self-care. We all have time for it, and it’s not a luxury. It’s not lazy to recharge when you need to and there’s nothing frivolous about making yourself a priority in your own life.
You’ve all heard the analogy about how you can’t pour from an empty vessel. When we give and give and give some more, we need to build ourselves back up so we can keep giving without getting burned out. You’re important to yourself and to other people, so you need to make sure that you’re taking care of yourself. It will make the year so much easier and more pleasant, I promise!
2.) Develop everyday self-care routines.
When you first hear “self-care” what comes to mind? A day of facials and manicures and bubble baths? That’s a great image, but doing that every once in a while is probably not enough for us in the self-care department. It should be an everyday thing. If you want to have an even better year, you should think about how you can practice self-care every day. Here are a few ideas:
Self-care for the body
- Be mindful of what you eat
- Get enough regular exercise
- Take any vitamins/supplements you may need
- Drink plenty of water
- Rest when you need to
Self-care for the mind
- Make time to read more
- Write in a journal
- Spend time on your hobbies
- Develop healthy ways to handle stress
- Work on positive self-talk
Self-care for the soul
- Practice meditation
- Attend religious services
- Spend time in nature
- Practice gratitude
3.) Make your health a top priority.
Whether you want to lose weight or get in better shape or not, prioritizing your health is always a good idea. Don’t overdo it on junk food, make sure you’re exercising regularly, try to find healthy ways to deal with stress, and take vitamins and supplements that will help keep your health in order.
I take vitamin C for my immune health, and some of you probably already know that I love my Renew Life Ultimate Flora Probiotics for my gut health, too. Research proves that a healthy gut helps lower stress levels, boost energy and immunity, and it improves mood, memory, and digestion.
4.) Be more present and mindful.
As with most things in life, we need to stop every once in a while. When you keep driving a car that’s out of gas, it will eventually break down. The same goes for us. Sometimes we need to just stop and look around, put our phones down, be present and pay attention to our loved ones. I can’t stress how important this is.
If you often feel unsettled, overwhelmed, and stressed out, I guarantee that cutting out the technology for a minute to actually live life and pay attention to things will help you so much. Spending time outdoors or interacting with the world is actually a wonderful thing. Life is way too short to let it fly by without being fully present, especially when it comes to what’s important to you.
5.) Show compassion – to everyone.
One thing that this world sorely lacks is compassion. You may notice that some people around you don’t hold the same values and beliefs as yourself, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t love them anyway. I say that in 2018 everyone should just start living with compassion toward everyone – including themselves.
Don’t beat yourself up when you make a mistake or something goes wrong. Reward yourself when something goes right, celebrate every victory, and “treat yo’self” once in a while. Hate and negativity weigh on a person and all it does is bring YOU down. So learn to forgive and let things go. Life is also too short to not be compassionate toward yourself and your fellow humans!
