When I decided to start this blog last year, I didn’t even know that you could make money blogging. Honestly, I didn’t know very much about blogging, period. All I knew was that I wanted to write and I wanted to help women in some way.
But as soon as I started looking up blogging advice and tips, I realized that so many bloggers were talking about blog monetization. I realized that I could be making money doing this thing I had been wanting to do forever – and that was amazing to me.
I have to point out that I don’t think you should go into blogging with a “get rich quick” mindset. Yes, some people go into blogging for the money and they end up earning right away.
Other bloggers wait years before they make an income blogging, though. And if you’re in it solely for the money, it will probably get old quickly because blogging takes hard work and devotion. I recommend starting a blog because you WANT to blog, and making money if it fits with what you’re doing.
But either way, here are 7 ways to make money with your blog!
1.) Affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing was one of the first things I did to make money with my blog, even though it took a long while before I made my first dollar with it. In case you don’t know what it is, affiliate marketing is promoting a product or service that you like and earning a small commission when someone purchases the product through your affiliate link.
You can sign up for affiliate programs such as Amazon (which I use), Flex Offers, and CJ Affiliate. A lot of sites and services like Creative Market, Swagbucks, and Ebates have affiliate programs too. Also, a lot of individual online courses and sometimes even ebooks or other products have affiliate programs. Just check on a brand’s website to see if they have some sort of affiliate program. Make sure you’re only referring your readers to products that you actually recommend, though.
Another way to earn money through blogging is to place ads on your blog. There are a couple of ways that I know to do this. One is through selling ad space and one is working with ad networks.
You could sell ad space directly to other bloggers or businesses. Like $X for placing their ad on your sidebar for 1 month. You could earn a lot of money this way but for me, it’s easier to just work with an ad network.
Here are a few different ad networks you could work with:
- Google AdSense – Easy for small blogs to get accepted
- Media.net – I used to work with them and they’re great
- Sovrn – I also used to work with them and they’re also great
- AdThrive – I currently work with AdThrive and they’re wonderful
3.) Join a direct sales company
I’ve seen a lot of bloggers make money by working as a direct sales consultant for different companies. Direct sales companies are companies like Avon, where consultants sell products and earn a commission (or maybe just free products) from them. Sort of like an affiliate but different.
Here are some companies I’ve seen bloggers working with:
4.) Offer a service
Many bloggers earn money through their blog by creating a “Hire Me” or “Work With Me” page and offering a service. With offering a service on your site (and pitching to people/businesses) the money can be endless. The options of what services to offer can also be endless. Here are a few ideas:
- Freelance writing
- Virtual assistance
- Coaching (life coaching, business coaching, health coaching, etc.)
- Social media management
- Editing and/or proofreading
- Website design
- Branding services
You could also get creative and offer a unique service relevant to your niche. For example, if you’re a health food blogger, you could offer a service creating custom meal plans for people. Like I said, the options can be endless!
5.) Create a digital product
Creating a digital product is a great way to earn money with your blog. I currently sell a book and workbook on my blog. I’m actually working on my second right now! 🙂 Digital products are anything like e-books, email courses, e-courses, printables, webinars, digital workbooks, or anything else that your readers can download or use online.
Think about your readers, the problems they’re facing, and your niche to come up with the perfect digital product. Using the health food blogger example again, you could create an e-cookbook filled with healthy recipes. If you’re stuck for ideas, survey your audience to see what they want!
6.) Sell a physical product
Another unique way to make money with your blog is to sell physical products. There are a few different ways that you can do this, too.
You could sell items that you make, like crafts or artwork. You could sell t-shirts, coffee mugs, and other items with your blog name or logo – or with designs/sayings that you create related to your niche. Teespring is a great site to use to make these products. Or if you already have an Etsy, eBay, or Amazon store, you could just link to it on your blog.
7.) Write sponsored posts
Sponsored posts are blog posts that you write for brands about their product or service. They’re a great way to make money with your blog as long as you’re only working with brands and writing about products that you really like. Don’t go overboard and write about anything and everything.
Sometimes brands come to you asking you to work with them, but sometimes you have to find them. You could either pitch them directly, or you could join an influence network that connects you with brands looking to work with bloggers.
