You don’t need me to tell you that life can be complicated. We all know that by now, right? We have work to do, relationships with friends and family to keep up with, children and/or pets to take care of, finances to keep on top of, and household chores – just to name a few things. We can have so much going on and so many things that need our attention at any given time.
I’ve always had a problem with thinking that everything is top priority for me. I thought that all areas of my life needed my full attention at all times. I used to view this as a good thing, but it just doesn’t work. It causes me to waste time and energy on certain areas that don’t need it, while neglecting other areas that need work. It also caused me to feel overwhelmed for no reason, and it just wasn’t very healthy.
I feel like we all struggle (or have struggled) with prioritizing things in our life. Can you relate?
Today, I want to share my best tips on how to prioritize your life and making sure you have a healthy balance!
Figure out your top priorities
If you want to make an impact with your life and feel more balanced, you have to figure out what your top priorities are. Once you’re clear on this, you’ll be able to focus on what’s important and make better life choices. So, you have to figure out what activities, relationships, practices, and areas of your life that are most important to you.
What are your biggest goals in life right now? What do you want to improve on? What would help you create a happier life? Reflect on what you currently spend your time on and what you’ve been neglecting. Here are some examples of different priorities to get you started:
- Charity/giving back
Also, it’s good to remember that your top priorities in life can (and probably will) change every now and then. As your life circumstances change, the areas of your life that need the most attention change. So it’s always okay to come back and switch things up if and when you need to.
Dive deeper into your priorities
Once you have an idea of what your top three priorities are, it’s a good idea to write down activities, things to do, and ways to spend your time that will help you focus on these priorities. For example, if one of your top priorities is your health, your list might look something like this:
- Drink enough water
- Get enough sleep
- Eat healthy foods
- Practice self-care
This way, you know what prioritizing your health looks like and you know what exactly you should be focusing on. You should do this with all three of your priorities.
Look at how you’re spending your time
After you’ve figured out the things that you want to spend more time on, it’s time to reflect on how you’re spending your time right now. Chances are, you’re spending a lot of time on things that actually aren’t very important to you and neglecting certain areas that you’d like to prioritize.
After you’ve reflected on how you’re currently spending your time, make plans on how and what you would like to change. For example, if you’re spending way too much time on social media instead of working out, make plans to change it. Delete social media apps from your phone and find ways to remember to exercise instead.
Use tools to help you stick to your priorities
Now that you know what your top priorities are and how you can start focusing on them more, it’s time to actually do it! There are tons of apps and tools to help you with this. Here are a few phone apps that could help:
You could also use some sort of journal or daily planner to help you plan your time better. You could schedule your days and write down important tasks that you want or need to spend your time on. This will help you reach your goals and cut back on the time you spend on things that aren’t really important to you.
