If you’re anything like me, this time of year is leaving you wishing for warmer weather. I’m not a big fan of winter or the several inches of snow that can be covering the ground at any time. Sometimes I’m just dreaming of a tropical getaway. But we just don’t always have the time or money for a vacation whenever we feel like it.
That’s why staycations are so awesome.
In case you somehow haven’t heard, staycations are just what they sound like – staying at home for a vacation. You can spend it inside your actual home, in a local hotel, or having adventures near your home.
You can spend your staycation doing fun things like:
- Doing something active like rock climbing, geo-caching, or going for a hike.
- Relaxing by taking a bath, pampering yourself, or having a movie marathon.
- Spending time exploring new restaurants, stores, museums, etc in your community.
- Doing DIY projects, making crafts, trying out new recipes, or creating art.
Or maybe all of the above!
If you feel like getting away but just can’t go on vacation for some reason, a staycation is the next best thing. Staycations might not seem as glamorous or relaxing as an actual vacation, but they can still be pretty awesome.
Here are 6 tips for the perfect winter staycation!
1- Set a date and commit to it.
If you’re having a staycation, you should pick a date for it, just like you would schedule a vaction. Write it in your calendar and make sure you don’t make other plans or commitments during that time. If you don’t do this, you might end up planning other things and come up with excuses to put off the staycation.
2- Forget your routine.
If you want to have a real staycation, you have to abandon your normal day-to-day routine. You shouldn’t be doing any chores, checking your email, tidying up around the house, or doing anything work related. Instead, you should be letting go and treating yourself. It’s supposed to be like a vacation, after all!
3- Explore your options.
There are so many options when it comes to having a staycation, so you should really explore them and think about it. Do you want to relax or go on an adventure? Do you want to stay at home or go to a local hotel/Airbnb? Do you want someone to do it with you or do you want to be alone? Consider everything, just like you would with a vacation.
If Netflix or Hulu is usually how you spend time relaxing at home, it’s best if you make a rule not to rely on them during your staycation. Do something different – something you don’t normally do. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new!
4- Prep for it.
If you’re having a staycation, there’s even more prepping than you’d need to do for a vacation. It’s important that you take care of any responsibilities so you can free up your time and energy during the staycation. Here are a few ideas of things you’ll need to prep beforehand:
- Arranging for childcare if you need it
- Going grocery shopping
- Cleaning your house
- Doing your errands
- Taking care of work related things
5- Search for coupons and deals.
If you’re not staying home and really looking to save during your staycation, you should look for coupons and deals. Once you know what you’d like to do and where you’d like to go, check on websites like Groupon for coupons. They always have great deals and it can save you a lot of money. It could also give you some ideas of where to go during your staycation!
If you want to get the most out of your staycation, you should really give your complete attention to what you’re doing. That means unplugging – staying off of your phone, your tablet, your laptop, etc. Not only will this help you be more present during the staycation, but it will also help you to reduce your stress and have more fun!
