In my opinion, maintaining a positive mindset is one of the most important things you can do in terms of living a happy life. If you’re a regular reader of TIL, you probably know that. I talk about it all the time.
A lot of people ask me how I stay so positive all the time. And a lot of people complain to me that positive thinking is crap, and it’s impossible to ignore the negative realities of life.
That’s why, before I get into the post, I want to point out two important things:
- Positive thinking and keeping a positive mindset have nothing to do with ignoring the negatives. Of course, bad things happen and of course, you can’t just ignore them and live in La La Land. Positive thinking is about choosing to focus on the positive instead of wallowing in the negative. It actually takes a lot of work and commitment to train your brain to be more positive, too.
- I’m not positive all of the time. I have my moments, days, sometimes weeks, where I’m feeling down. I struggle with depression and anxiety. You have to be realistic – nobody can be positive 100% of the time. I just choose to look at the bright side of things and yes, that does make me positive most of the time. But, sometimes life gets the best of me.
With all of that being said, here are 7 ways that I keep a positive mindset in negative situations!
Accept things as they are.
So many times, when we’re going through tough times, our mindset is made worse because we can’t accept things how they are. We complain that things aren’t fair or things aren’t as they should be. But life isn’t always fair and sometimes bad things happen. We can’t control everything. Instead of thinking about how badly you want things to change, accept them as they are. Focus on the present moment and stop resisting.
Develop a morning routine.
When you wake up and drag yourself out of the bed all tired and grumpy, it sets a negative tone for the day. But if you start the day strong with a good morning routine, you set a positive tone for the day. Developing the right morning routine also gives you time to do the things that you need or want to do each morning, which will make you feel more positive and more productive.

Spend your time on positive people.
We tend to be very similar to the people we spend the most amount of time with. Negativity and positivity both tend to rub off on people; they’re contagious. So, if you want to be positive then you should try to spend more time with positive people. I’m not just talking about being positive in their outlook on life, although that’s important too. I’m also talking about the way they make you feel. You should be spending time with people who make you feel confident, loved, and appreciated. If someone is constantly tearing you down or making you feel bad, they’ve got to go!

Brainstorm a solution.
A lot of times, there are ways out of the negative situations that we’re in. But even if you’re in a situation that you can’t control, there are still options to improve the situation or help you deal. If you’re really struggling, sit down, relax and brainstorm solutions to your situation. Then take action on the solution that seems most effective to you. This could be something as complex as solving your problem or something as simple as finding something to take your mind off of it.
Create a vision board.
Focusing on your goals and building a future you love can go a long way toward helping you stay positive. A vision board is a great way to do this. My vision board helps me feel motivated and optimistic about the future. A lot of people believe that the more you focus on your goals, the easier they will come (à la the law of attraction). Vision boards are just a really positive thing!

Focus on gratitude, always.
Practicing gratitude is a great way to make every day a little happier. It can literally transform your life and your mind. I know this from both studies that have been done on it and my personal experience. It’s such a simple concept but if you give it a try with an open mind, I’m sure you’ll see the benefits too. It might be the single biggest thing I’ve done in terms of feeling happier and more positive. If you’re really looking to learn more about gratitude and how it can have an impact on your life, I recommend reading my favorite self-improvement book, Thank & Grow Rich. 🙂

Feed your mind positivity.
They say you are what you eat. Well, that goes for your mind too! This is something I have to be super mindful of because I’m so sensitive and it’s so easy for things to affect my moods and my outlook. If you’re constantly watching negative news stories, reading sad books, listening to depressing music, and things like that, then of course you’re going to be feeling more negative and moody. Make sure that you’re not over-doing this negativity. This can be hard because there seems to be negativity injected into so many things these days. But try to read something uplifting, watch a comedy, and listen to upbeat music. Then, notice how much happier you feel.
