First, I have to say that I actually meant to publish this post before the new year, but life happened. So, I’m sorry it’s a little late!
I’ve seen people picking “words of the year” or “focus words” for at least a few years now. I always thought it was a pretty cool idea but I kind of shrugged it off and never picked one. Like New Year’s resolutions, I always figured it’s something that kind of fades away after a couple weeks of the year.
But this year, I decided to choose one. I don’t know why; I just felt compelled to. After some thought (and taking It’s All You Boo’s quiz) I decided to choose the word “fearless.”
“free from fear”
synonyms: bold, brave, courageous, heroic, daring, unafraid, feisty”
You see, I talk a lot about anxiety and leaving your comfort zone. But that doesn’t mean I’m immune to fear and giving in to being afraid. Yes, I’ve gotten better about stepping out of my comfort zone and facing my fears, but I’m nowhere near where I want to be. I want to be fearless – or as fearless as a human can be, anyway.
There are things I’ve done in 2017 that caused me to step out of my comfort zone and I’m proud of myself for doing them. But there were even more things I didn’t do because I was scared, even if I didn’t admit it to myself at the time. There are opportunities I’ve turned down and goals I’ve put off because of fear. That’s no way to live.
But I’m determined to change all of that.
I want to step out of my comfort zone a lot in 2018. I want to do things that make me uncomfortable. I want to be brave and grow. I want to use this word to shape the decisions that I make daily, and to remind myself of the changes I want to make in my life.
I encourage all of you to think of a word for 2018 too if you haven’t already! If you pick a word or already have one, share it with me in the comments. 🙂
But how do I plan on actually implementing my word of the year? I thought of a few ways to do this. I love the idea of picking a word but if you want to actually live it out, you have to be determined.
So I just bought this inexpensive bracelet from Amazon. It was 10 bucks and it’s cute so it was worth it. I plan on wearing it to remind myself to face my fears. You can find jewelry for other words on Amazon or Etsy.
– Bullet journal
I devoted about 4 pages in my bullet journal to my word. I’m also going to be brainstorming things that I can actually DO to face my fears in different areas of my life. I can come back to this page to add more things as I think of them and cross off the things if I actually do them. I’m not great at the whole bullet journal system yet, but I’m getting better and I love my bujo, so this should be fun!
– Pinterest board
I also created a secret board on Pinterest for my word. It’s kind of like a vision board. Right now, it just has a few quotes, but I plan to add more quotes and images that inspire and motivate me to stick to my word. You could also print out a vision board or make one out of magazines or whatever else you want. It’s all about what works best for YOU.
A really great way to actually implement your word of the year into your life is to read books about it. Try to find inspiring or motivational books on the theme of your word. Since my word is fearless, I looked for books about stepping out of your comfort zone, being confident, and facing your fears or anxiety. Right now I’m reading My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind. Here are a few more books I’ve found about overcoming fear that I plan on reading in 2018:
- Conquering Fear: Living Boldly in an Uncertain World
- Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person
- The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level
Do you have a word for 2018? If so, what is it? Let me know in the comments!
